How To Overcome The Herpes Outbreaks And The Related Problems With Sex?

I am 52 years old and have alot of herpes outbreaks. I stop having a period at 44 years of age. My husband and I, married 9 years now are having some sexual difficulties. I have alot of discomfort during intercourse and the outbreaks are getting worse over time. I have also had 3 unhealthy papsmears, not in the last several years though. But when I do have intercourse, the walls feel very tender and I cramp for a few days afterwards. I am not on HRT anymore. I stop taking femhrt 8 months ago, after taking it for 6 years. I really believe there might be something serious wrong with me. The papsmear in July for fine. With all of this trouble, I wonder if I had a hysterectomy and took hormones, would I be physcially better. thank you, Angie

OB & GYN Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Sometimes herpes do have recurrences as the virus remains dormant. You might need some local antiviral cream and anti-viral oral medications for longer duration to keep this infection suppressed. I would also suggest you to do a baseline ultrasound to look for ovaries and uterus. As you have mentioned the PAP is normal, I would prefer to see the PAP report myself. I can advise you further about going ahead with hysterectomy or starting HRT after getting more details about your symptoms as well.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Arif N. Khan, OBGYN
