How To Ascertain Whether I Had An Incomplete Abortion?

Im 38 yrs old, 5''4 in height and weighing 49kls. Last january 5 was my last menstruation. Had unprotected sex 17th of january. Took nordette on january 21 but threw up the 2nd dose. Was not able to took another pills after i threw up. Because i'm worried i might be pregnant i was able to read about inducing menstruation. Took vitamin c 1000mg a day from january 24-27 then increase dosage to 1000mg every 2 hours. Took dong quai on feb 1 1,060mg every 4 hours. Had bleeding everytime i pee the following day feb 2. The bleeding from vagina everytime i urinate is from light to moderate flow with some blood tissues. It lasted for 2 days only. It stopped and after a few days light bleeding again. Bought pregnancy test kit on feb 5, it was negative. Im worried with my tummy because it size is a little bigger than normal. Im worrying if i had an incomplete abortion.

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

I just want to first state that both termination of pregnancy and preventing ovulation (like the morning-after pill) with vitamins and supplements is not possible, and attempting to do so can produce side-effects or even harmful effects on your body that will not affect your risk of pregnancy.

Emergency contraception (with birth control pills or the Plan B kit) works the best withing 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. You took it even later, so even though you vomited the medication, it was unlikely to have been effective. Then you consumed massive doses of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) that most likely made your urine so acidic that you developed bleeding with urination. And then you began to bleed vaginally on February 2nd, which may be slightly early, but is roughly a month from your last period, and had a negative pregnancy test. Seeing tissue in your menstrual flow is not unusual if you are not bleeding very heavily.

So in summary, I doubt that you were ever pregnant, and the symptoms you have been having are most likely side-effects from all the supplements you took.

In the future, I advise you purchase an emergency contraception kit and keep it in the house in case you accidentally have unprotected sex. The kit works 90 percent of the time if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, and does not produce significant side effects. Supplements should only be taken according to the manufacturer's directions.

I hHello, and I hope I can help you today.

if you are having unprotected intercourse without using any form of contraception, you are risk for pregnancy.

Pregnancy symptoms can vary widely between women, and symptoms of bloating, cramps, breast tenderness, mood changes, and irregular bleeding can be caused by hormonal irregularities as well as pregnancy.

The most common sign of pregnancy however, is a late or missed menstrual period.

So, I recommend that you purchase and perform a urine pregnancy test with your first morning urine according to the package directions. This will confirm whether or not you are pregnant.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that this information was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
