How Can Constipation During A Pregnancy Be Treated?

Hi Im 37 weeks pregnant and very constipated. Ive tried high fibre diet etc etc etc and my pharmacist has recommended lactulose. Is this safe this end of pregnancy, I dont want my baby to open his bowels like Ive heard castor oil can cause. Also will i be at any risk of it bringing me into labour?

Hi,
I understand your concern.
Pregnancy constipation is mostly due to sluggish intestinsl movements due to pregnancy hormones & digestive problems there in.
- Object of it's management should aim at having sufficient fibers in diet along with drinking plenty of water( which allow the fibers to swell & move down due to bulk )
- Regular mild exercises in form of walk for 30 minutes enhances bowel movements. Simple yoga postures done under expert guidance help .
- Mild stool softener like Lactulose can be safely taken in late pregnancy too.
- Mild laxatives Liquid paraffin(cremaffin/ Agarol )can be taken 2-4 spoons at bed time with warm water to relieve constipation. Alternatively. a cup of warm milk with half tea spoon of ghee at bed time helps .
Thanks.
