Having Swollen Ankle, Taking Caps, RA Factor Negative, X Ray Results Show Soft Tissue Swelling, No Fracture. Reason And Remedy?

Thanks a lot. I have been having a swollen ankle for the past 2 weeks. The swelling extends to the feet too. On elevation it goes down. I have been taking medications . My blood tests for RA factor, thyroid have come negative. what must be the reason for the swelling not subsiding completely? The x ray results show soft tissue swelling, no fracture. I am deficient in vitamin d3 & anaemic. The doctor has recommended medicines for this. He has advised ankle support and elevation of feet and has put me on anti inflamatory drugs. I would highly appreciate if you can throw light on the possible reason for the swelling and the remedy to rectify it. Thanks . Shashikala.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

I suspect LYMPHEDEMA as the cause for your unilateral ankle swelling.

The general treatment measures include exercise, elevation, compressive garments, intermittent pneumatic compression etc.

There are numerous other causes that produces one sided ankle odema like Gout, Venous insufficiency, infective or allergic etiologies, deep vein thrombosis etc. A detailed evaluation is necessary to establish a correct diagnosis.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
