Have Swollen Ankles, No Smoking Or Drinking. Not Overweight. Need Help

Hi ----I am a 62 year old female and suffer from swollen ankles.....I am not overweight , do not smoke or drink.
Both ankles have been swollen for about 5 years now and I never wear dresses or skirts as a result.
Do not take any medications or suffer from any illnesses thank God.
Would really appreciate your help......is it diet related ---although I eat a healthy diet
I take regular exercise and walk every day for approx an hour and swim once a week.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Bilateral swelling of the lower limbs can be due to a number of different causes.
It can result from: (1) venous disease- the legs have two layers of veins, the superficial veins and the deep veins. There are valves so that the blood flows in one direction - from the superficial veins to the deep veins and then back up to the heart.
In some cases blood can accumulate in the veins resulting in swelling.

(2) heart disease
(3)kidney disease
(4) liver disease
(5) decreased level of protein
(6)trauma to the ankles
(7)side effect of medications

You may want to consider visiting your doctor for assessment to determine if any of these can be the cause of your symptoms.

I hope this helps
