Have Periods Due On Monday, Condom Broke. Can Loestrin Taken As Contraceptive?

Can I use loestrin 30 as emergency contraceptive? I work on a ship and have no access to a pharmacy for plan b. I was going to start the contraceptive pill on Monday when my period is due but a condom broke last night. Also, how do I then start taking loestrin as a contraceptive after using it as emergency contraceptive? Thank you.

Hi,
Thanks for your query.
Loestrin (norethienderon+ethynil estradiol) is used as birth contraception pills, it may not be used as an emergency contraceptive because studies only done on levonorgesterol as an emergency contraception not on norethinderon which is present in loestrin.
You should start loestrin as birth control from the first day of your menstrual cycle.
Don't worry.
Take care.

OBGYN Dr. Aarti Abraham's  Response
Hello
Thanks for your query.
Loestrin 30 is not the emergency contraceptive of choice.
YOu can go ahead and take a risk, by taking two tablets at once, and then two tablets 12 hours later.
however, i repeat, this is not advisable and not guaranteed of protecting against pregnancy.
Also, it should ideally be used as a regular contraceptive.
Wait for your period to begin, and start using a fresh pack from the 1st or 2nd day of your cycle, if you intend to use it as a regular contraceptive.
Please consult the gynecologist / physician on board the ship for detailed prescription and guidance.
take care.
