Have Major Sciatic Pain, Overweight, Arthritis. Taken X Ray. On Anti Inflammatories. Sufficient?

I have major sciatic pain down my left leg. It is debilitating at times. I went to a doctor 4 weeks ago and she put me on anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxers. Now i have had an xray....narrowing of l4 and l5 consistent with arthritis. I am overweight and have been an athlete all my life. What would u say is next step?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us,

As per your symptoms probability is lumbar disc bulge compressing your spinal nerves leading to pain in your hips and down.

MRI spine will confirm diagnosis so I will advise to do that.
Muscle relaxant with neurotropic medication will help to relieve symptoms.
Till that time Physiotherapy like USG and SWD will give some relief

You need diet management to decrease weight ,as it will aggravate disc symptoms.
I hope that I have answered your query. Let me know if I can help you further. Take care

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

If your radicular pain in the legs is not responding to conservative management with medications then Epidural steroid injections may offer you good symptom relief for a few months to years depending upon the severity of the disc protrusion compressing the nerve roots.

I suggest you to approach your treating doctor and discuss the issues.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
