Have Colitis And Reactive Arthritis. Found Blood In Bowel Movement After Taking Probiotic So Should I Stop It?

Hi, I am a 63 year old woman with colitis and reactive arthritis. I tried takin a probiotic but after a few days saw blood with a bowel movement. Does this mean I should stop taking probiotics altogether or could it have been the specific one that caused the bleeding?

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

Bleeding occurred from the colon ulcers due to colitis and NOT due to Probiotic.

Probiotics are good bacteria, which help in proper digestion of food in colitis patients. Hence, it should NOT be stopped. You should also take Folic acid and Vitamin B12 supplements, since there is deficiency of these vitamins due to absorption abnormality in the diseased colon.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me, order required tests, and- based on the reports- will prescribe suitable/modified treatment as advised.
