Had Undergone TURP, Biopsy Report Was Non Malignant. Psa Levels Are More. Have Varying Levels. Treatment?

my father undergone TURP in 2006 and biopsy report was non malignent.but as psa level was more than 40 the sugeon prescribed cyptamed for 3 months.as psa level lowered to around 12, doctor reexamined the sample but the report was same..The surgeon then prescribed lupride(3.75),one each in next three months.afterwards psa level lowered down below 2.medine was stopped for next 2 years but when psa was again checked the level found to be plus 40.this time lupride(11.25) was adminstered, one each in next three months.medicine was stopped as the psa leve fall below 2.Last month's psa test showed psa level shoot up to 39.My father(90 yrs old) is reluctant to visit a doctor because he is not suffering from urination problem nor he is aware that he was being teated with cancer medicine.Would you kindly suggest what should be the best step forward.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello. The treatment that has received his father is correct.
A prostate cancer in a person of 50 years, the treatment is remove the prostate and radiotherapy .The treatment is aggressive but the benefits outweigh the adverse effects.
A prostate cancer in a person of 90 years, must be considered that life expectancy is short and cancer progress slowly.Surgery and radiotherapy cause more adverse effects than benefits and therapy is injected hormonal treatment. If psa level is now in 39, the injected hormonal treatment would need again.Althought now he dont have pain, the cancer can spread to the bones and cause pain.
I wish you good health.

sir welcome you to HCM ,
as you told your father age is is 90 years now and he is on cancer treatment, regular follow up..... better to concern doc to whom you are following. As you told he is reluctant to visit doctor, try to make him to realize that as you are getting old, so better to visit doctor regularly for general check ups to keep you healthy like that......
as your father history suggestive of some cancers cells still residing even after TURP...... this type of residual microscopic cancerous cells will be there even after surgery so thats why they started treatment and regular psa follow ups to keep your father healthy and away from the full blown cancer .......
if still your father is not willing to visit doctor means at least you better meet concern doctor with last month psa report and take their advice also.....
thank you....
