Gastritis, Cramping, BM Contains Mucous. Stopped Taking PPI. Biopsy And Endoscopy Done. Diagnosis?

Stopped taking my PPI only to have rebound acid and some stomach discomfort. Had upper endoscopy done and was confirmed there was acid in stomach and biopsy was taken for Barretts esophogeous (Dr. does not think its that) Resumed PPI and noticed improvement. Do have some anxiety about biopsy and had some anxiety before hand while I was off of PPI and experienced some cramping that was usually relieved by having BM. A few of those BM contained some mucous that was attached to stool. Morning BM contains no visible mucous and seems that when I get anxious about these things the mucous will be present. Any connection?

Gastroenterologist 's  Response
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist (DM).

Barretts esophagus is a result of repeated acid reflux. So you have to take PPI regularly to prevent it's further progression.Few more tips:
1.Avoid fatty meals
2. Don't lie down soon after meals for at least half hour
3.Take small and frequent meals, instead of full meals at a time
4. wear loose clothes
5. If you are overweight or obese do weight reduction with dieting and exercise

Barretts esophagus if it comes on biopsy, it is treatable as many treatment modalities are available for that. So there is nothing to worry.

Presence of mucus along with stool is normal. So again nothing to worry. However cramps are present then you may use mild antispasmodic like mebeverine for better relief.

I don't think there is any relation with anxiety and presence of mucus in stool, it is just a coincidence

I hope I have answered your query and this will help you. Remain in touch and get-well soon.
