Gained Weight After Taking Medicines For Hypothyroid Problem
Hello. I am a 47 year old female who was diagnosed with hypothryroid disease two years ago. I never had a weight problem before. I have gained at least 30 pounds since I have been on the med prescribed. I was tested for menopause, but nothing showed a definite stage. I have hot flashes, weight gain, and am often forgetting things during the day. My energy level and libido are very low. I am also taking an anti-depressant due to stress related conditions in my job. I don't know what type of doctor to seek first.
Good day. Hypothyroidism generally make you gain few kilos of weight and once you start treatment, that extra weight usually go away.
The medicines used for Hypothyroidism do not cause weight gain. During peri-menopause, the hormonal changes can cause abnormal fat deposition especially around hips. Some of your symptoms like low energy level and libido can be due to a combination of problems like peri-menopause and depression. If you feel terrible hot flashes, vaginal drynesss etc, hormone therapy may help. Please meet a gynecologist or endocrinologist. You mentioned that you had tests for menopause earlier. What was your FSH levels ?
Anti Depressants can cause considerable weght gain. This is a known side effect of many anti depressants. Besides, people who are depressed tend to eat more especially snacks. You can discuss this problem with your GP or Psychiatrist who prescribed the anti depressants and they can consider a weight friendly medicine.
Mamy of these problems tend to get better after few years of menopause. Please do some exercise and Yoga etc and breathing exercise also helps.
Kind regards
Binu
