Feel Heavily Bloated After Exercise Routine, Weird Bowel Movements. Taking Antacids. Cure?

Hi. About 3 weeks ago after a strenuous ab exercise routine and a 20 mins run right after, I felt very bloated and even thought I was having a heart attack as the left side of my chest was hurting. After going to the emergency room and having my heart checked it transpired it was only extreme bloating . I left relieved. But since then I have problems sleeping because as soon as I lay down I get very bloated and obviously that makes me irritable. I tried lay on my left side but when I lay on either side it gets worse, I get more bloated. The first few days after the incident I would feel weird bowel movements right after I ate. But that has almost completely stopped for 8-10 days now. The only occasion when I see problems is when I go for my regular jog and when I lay down to sleep. When I jog I get very bloated but I can pass gas. But when I lay down to sleep I cannot. I have been taking antacids but they have made me constipated which increases the problem. I am 33 years old, healthy with no previous stomach or intestine problems and no allergies whatsoever. Thank you

Hello Good Evening,

There is possibility that you have got mild injury in abdomen due to strain during your abdominal exercises, and developed inflammation in the intestines, which can cause pain abdomen and bloating, to rule out you should go for a CT scan of abdomen.

You are suffered from bloating, which may cause constipation due to decreased bowel movements and constipation may also caused bloating.

There are many causes of bloating, including: diet, irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance, re flux, and constipation and some more.

Gas and bloating is a sign that food is not being digested correctly by the body. An inadequate intake of water will cause excessive stomach bloating.

Water benefits the body by aiding with digestion because it supports a majority of the body's daily functions.

Fatty foods cause a formation of fat cells to develop throughout the body and contribute to bloating as well. A build up of fat cells slows down the body's ability to empty the stomach.

Dairy products also contribute to excessive cramps, gas, and bloating.
Persons who are intolerant to lactose products experience this effect more than others.

Following steps should follows to lessen the bloating:

-Walk after eating a meal.
-Exercise
-Avoid coffee and chocolates.
-Avoid Meals that are high in fat.
-Avoid extremely hot or cold food.
-Avoid bubble gum or bubbly beverages.

If needed then medication should be included antacids, PPI, domperidone, Levosulpiride (prokinetic), digestive enzymes and some laxatives.

Regards,

Dr. Naresh Jain.
