Fast heart beat, shortness of breath during pregnancy, happens while laying on back. Reason?

i am 5 months pregnant and last night i had very fast heart beat in around mid of night. I woke up and was able to clearly hear my own heart beating and was having a little difficulty in taking breath. I was sleeping on my back when this happen and then I slept on my side and got normal in 5-10 minutes. Is it alright or is it an issue of concern.

Thanks for the query.

Palpitations, missed beats etc are common in pregnancy. They will appear as physiological changes and will not affect the circulation.
Some amount of breathlessness can also be seen in pregnancy. But breathlessness which is made to wake up from the sleep better to be evaluated.
Take care.

OBGYN Dr. Shanti Vennam's  Response
Pregnancy leads to changes in the body metabolism as well as the function of the vital organs. Pumping of the heart is increased in order to cope up with the situation and this sometimes leads to pulmonary hypertension, which subsides after delivery. You had experienced palpitation associated with breathlessness, which may have been caused by a similar condition. You have done the right thing, i.e., lying to the side. Though it is not so serious, if you repeatedly experience this, you should see a cardiologist in association with your gynecologist to exclude any pathology and take further treatment. Good luck.
