Echocardiogram Showing Heart Murmur. Result Was Aortic Stenosis. Is This Normal?

I am 57 years old and I recently had an echocardiogram ordered by my family physician, her Dx was heart murmur. The test result was an aortic stenosis, but my family doctor said that my heart was beating fine and I did not need any follow up or need for antibiotic with dental or other medical procedures that require this. Is this usual or what might I expect?

Hello Thanks for the query. It seems there is a confusion between your family physician and the echo-cardiogram report. Well, this is to inform you that the latest recommendations(2010) from american heart association is that prophylaxis is required before dental procedures are limited to 6 conditions. They are 1)Patients with a prosthetic cardiac valve, 2)Patients with a history of previous episodes of endocarditis, 3)Patients with un-repaired cyanotic congenital heart disease, 4) Patients who are post-operative or post-interventional catheterization with prosthetic material in place for six months while endothelialization occurs , 5) Repaired congenital heart disease where there is a residual defect at the site of or adjacent to prosthetic material and 6) Post-cardiac transplant patients with cardiac valvulopathy. NO OTHER CARDIAC OR CARDIAC VALVULAR CONDITIONS REQUIRE ANTIBIOTICS PROPHYLAXIS BEFORE DENTAL PROCEDURE. So whether you have aortic stenosis or not, it doesn't matter in relation to prophylaxis before dental procedures. Be happy and enjoy your life...

according to american heart association or bha u need not to tak any antibiotic prophylaxis for the aortic stenosis.
before any dental procedure .so u need to worry as long as ur developing any furthr symptom due AS.
generally atibiotic prophylaxis before dental procedure is given to counter act the chance of development of sabe .now most of the cases where chance of development of sabe ,are previously injured mitral valve or previous history of sabe.
though there are group has been classified by aha

lets now in your case decision is 50-50 ,if due AS u developed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy thn u should be prescribed antibiotic before thn procedure (surgical dental procedure where sufficient amount blood inv) o.w u may not take antibiotic

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

I would like to tell you that an antibiotic prophylaxis is usually required in case of prosthetic valve patient, in a patient with the history of endocardititis, congenital heart diseases, cardiac transplant, cardiac valuopathy, post operative patients with prosthetic materials.

In the case of aortic stenosis antibiotic prophylaxis may not be required for a dental procedure.

Hope you find this as helpful,

Regards.
