hi about 4 weeks ago mildly broke my 5th metatarsal fracture the second week i had a doctor appointment had a x-ray it showed good position and alignment i have an appointment on the 29th of this month my feet seems to be doing better but am concern because its still has little swelling in a not on the side wear i broke it is this a concern i need to worry about
Actually any fracture healing goes through a phase of initial trauma swelling(1-2 weeks), followed by, healing swelling (2-8 weeks) when new bone is formed and then, a remodelling Phase (2 months -2 yrs) when swelling is likely to diminish. You are in the second stage when new bone is forming and the healing process is well underway. It is entirely normal to have a swelling as you described. During this stage it is important to give rest to the healing part-avoid long periods standing, walking on the feet. Calcium and vit D3 supplements also help in this phase.
Hope this helps Do let me know if you have any more queries on this one, Dr Purushottam Reddy Padala MS(Ortho) FRCS Consultant orthopaedic Foot and ankle surgeon Happy Feet Foot clinics. Hyderabad. India http://happyfeetfootclinics.com
