Does Bleeding In Fecal Matter Due To Flu Is An Emergency?

Hi, my husband was sick with the flu a couple of weeks ago and pooped out a small amount of blood along with a pain in his left side. He was told by his GP if it happens again to go to the emergency room. He informed me tonight tj happend again and his side has been bothering him a lot over the last few days esp today. What could be the problem? Should I bring him to the ER?

Hi,
There are a number of causes of blood in the faeces. It is unlikely to be related to the flu, this would have been a coincidence that it happened at the same time.He does need to be investigated for this. The common causes include haemorrhoids, anal fissures. Less common causes would include diverticula, polyps or bowel cancer. This is why it is important to see a doctor promptly.
Hope this helps you.
