Diagnosed With Congestive Heart Failure. Had Open Heart Surgery. Having Swollen Feet And Legs. Normal?

My mother had open heart surgery to replace one valve and repair another last January. She was back home by the first of February only to be re-admitted to the hospital in mid February and then diagnosed with congestive heart failure. She has been back home again since the first of March....still recouping from her surgery and dealing the all the meds and low sodium diet for a person with CHF....and really doing fairly well. (She is 81 years young.) Even though she takes PLENTY of diuretic daily, her feet and lower legs are always swollen...never all the way down to normal. But today....she found one of her legs is "weeping" clear fluid. What should she do that she is not doing? (Her weight has been good....no gain...but she has no appetite.)

Hi there ~

I understand your concern for your mother. I wonder if you are having her be seen by a cardiologist for the diuretic medications. It would help to do so if you have not. You also do not mention what diuretics she is on. There are different kinds and it might help to know which ones she is on. Keeping the leg elevated may help in reducing the edema in her legs. I hope this helps.

Take care and have a lovely day!
