Diagnosed With Celiac Disease. Struggling With Anxiety, Depression. Suggestions?

Hi. I have been dealing with celiac disease for approximately 20 yrs. I would like to know if there are doctors I could see that is well versed with this disease. I deal daily with anxiety and depression and do take meds for same. Also have visited psychiatrists, behavorial th., psychologists and the list goes on yet my family doc doesn't feel celiac has anything to do with it.

Would love to hear your opinion as I struggle daily with both anxiety and depression.

Hi,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic!

I understand that you are doing well on treatment for anxiety, depression and celiac disease and would like to know if your family doctor is right when he says that celiac disease has nothing to do with the psychiatric symptoms.

As far as my knowledge goes, there is enough evidence in the form of scientific research to show that depression is significantly more common and likely to be more severe in adults with celiac disease than in healthy adults. For anxiety, the evidence is not so strong. One of the reasons that have been given for this is presence of low serotonin levels in people with celiac disease. Some studies have shown that gluten free diet helps in improving the psychiatric symptoms associated with celiac disease.

Hope this answers your query. Feel free to contact us if there is something else you would like to know.

Best wishes.
