Depression, Anxiety, Bowel Disorders. Zoloft Useful?

My daughter is 21, married, and has a 2-1/2 year old son. Her mother died about 6 yrs ago and, as you might expect, it had a huge, traumatic impact. She had Medicare coverage during her pregnancy and for a time afterward. During this time she was seeing a psychologist for her depression and anxiety. Se also suffered from bowel disorders sincce she was a child, which was alternately diagnosed as IBS and/or Chrones Disease. We even thought perhaps she had Herschprungs Desease, after these symptoms also got much worse after her baby was born. She inadvertently missed renewing her Medicare and lost her coverage, and has been denied renewal ever since (nearly 2 years now). Without access to her medication, her mental & emotional state spiraled downward. Actually to the point of pulling her own hair out. Recently she happened upon an acquaintance who had been on Zoloft, but had her prescription changed recently. This person still had a small amount of Zoloft, and offered to my daughter if she wanted to give it a try. Being desperate, she accepted the 100 mg pills and started taking 1/2 a pill (50 mg). It has transformed her life. She is now active and vibrant again, and even moves her bowels a little each morning. She manages her 2 yr old much easier as well, as you might expect. She says there is a local clinic where she can obtain additional Zoloft and, presumably, continue her new life and perhaps even return to nursing school, from which she was expelled several moths ago because she missed too much time, being sick with her bowel issues. So, that's my/her story. Can you offer any thoughts or advice at this point? Thank you.

Welcoem to HCM!

I am really happy after reading your question as your patient got correct medicine in time and can becoem completely fine!!

Please ask her to continue with Zoloft as she has depression and anxiety and is showing good response to the medicine. if she is taking it from more than a month, one can plan to increase the dosage to 75 mg daily to increase the improvement.

You are right that she has some response to her IBS symptoms with this medicine, as IBS has links with psychological disorders and this condition seems to improves with antidepressants and anti anxiety drugs.

Along with medicine, please ask her to take lots of fluid and salad ( few pieces at one time) all through the day. Antidepressant are supposed to cause dry mouth and may lead to constipation, these measures help in handling them and increasing the dosage without side effects. Ask her to take sips of water every 10- 15 minutes all through the day, this will prevent dry mouth.

Also, important part is duration of treatment, usually the treatment lasts for 6months to an year in new cases, but here it is a relapse and no details are avialable so, ask her to consult a psychiatrist for what time she should continue it. She should not discontinue the treatment herself even if she get 100% ok.

In between she should get blood counts, thyroid profile and liver and kidney function test done every six months to check the organs.

All the best, I am sure she will recover completely!
Hope the reply helps you
