Could Stiffness And Pain In Neck Be Due To Muscle Strain?

My husband was lifting weights and he heard/ felt three cracks in his neck. His neck is now very stiff and painful. He cannot turn it to the left or right nor up or down. Could this just be a muscle strain or could it possibly be something more severe?

Dear Madam,

iT COULD BE MUSCLE SPRAIN AS IT SEEMS BUT A X RAY CERVICAL SPINE IS IMMEDIATELY INDICATED TO SEE IF SOMETHING MORE IS GOING WRONG BECAUSE JUST ON THE BASIS OF HISTORY CANNOT BE SAID.
