Could Recurring Cough For Months Be Whooping Cough?

My husband has had a severe cough since Christmas,2013. He was told that he may have asthma...now the doctors said that it may be whooping cough. Our concern is we have been around newborns in the last few days. Do you think it could be whopping cough?? Eileen.

Pertussis outbreaks in the U.S. can occur and cause illness even among those individuals who are vaccinated. Pertussis bacteria cause the illness whooping cough. The cough is a hacking and continuous prolonged cough rather than one or two coughs in a row. If you have asthma, this may complicate the illness and it should be treated with albuterol and possibly with steroids. It is best to see your physician to be tested for pertussis and influenza. A chest radiograph may be indicated. My pulmonary practice accepts telephone consultations if you fax a summary to 858 259-9689 along with a copy of your insurance card. The cost will be billed to your insurance company only. I will then call you back to discuss his case.
