Could Metoprolol Be The Cause Of Sudden Dizziness?
My Sister in Law has been accidentally taking metoprolol (50 mg/kg/say, twice daily). She only discovered it when she was feeling dizzy and I asked her to tell me what she was taking,. She probably will metabolize this in 8 hours, but I am concerned about sudden cessation... she had only taken the medication for 4 days. Question: What should I tell her...??
She is indeed taking extremely high (toxic) dose of Metoprolol, which causes marked fall in blood pressure, as well as, low pulse rate- both of which are causing dizziness.
Ask her to reduce the dose to 25mg/kg/day for two days, then 12.5mg/kg/day for 2 days; then, 5mg/kg/day for two days and thereafter, take the prescribed dose.
In case of any severe problems of severe dizziness, palpitations, chest pain- consult her doctor immediately.
