Cough, Congestion, Fever, Ear Pain. Taking Amoxicillin, Using Saline Nasal Spray. Cure?

My son has had a cough, congestion and low grade fever for over a week now. We were in the ER and at his pediatrician . We were told it was viral, flu . Give it time. Yesterday he was complaining if ear pain, took him to a med express and he had an infection in his right ear. Left with amoxicillin and were told to use saline nose spray. Today he has fluid leaking from his left ear. He says it doesn t hurt but is itchy. The outer ear is crusty from the fluid draining. What is going on?

Hi thanks for your question.
From the symptoms it looks like that your child is having upper respiratory tract infection, which has spreaded to his left ear causing otitis media( infection of middle ear) The leaking of fluid from his ear could be due to rupture of his ear drum secondary to middle ear infection.
The infection could be intially viral, but now he might have superadded bacterail infection.
Continue with antibiotic ,nasl decongestant and antihistiminics. He may alos requine anti inflammatory analgesic drugs.
Keep his ear dry.
Hope this answers your question.

HI I have gone through your mail,as you said your son is having cough, congestion fever and ear pain right side later he noticed watery fluid is leaking from his left ear and this drained fluid is forming a crust at external ear canal after drying, considering your all these complaints I am suspecting that your son is having upper respiratory tract infection with acute otitis media both ears, please need not to worry,at first your son was having nasal congestion and nasal dischage which had spread posteriorly to involve the throat thus producing the cough, after this infection had spread further via eustechian tube (tubular connection between throat and ear)to his both ears to developed disease called as acute otitis media in both ears,on right ear this is giving pain only while on left ear probably it had developed small hole in ear drum which causes leaking of accumulated fluid in ear canal. My opinion is that you should contact your E.N.T.specialist for clinical examination of nose, throat and ears of your son,you are also adviced to go for these basic investigations like-(1) C.T.Scan of paranasal sinuses,(2) Culture & sensitivity of nasal discharge and throat swab,(3) pure tone audiometery of ears,(4) Impedance audiometery of both ears,(5) Blood-CBC, ESR, Sugar (fasting & PP ).After findings of physical eamination by your doctor and co-relating them with results of investigations one can make correct diagnosis than only treatment may be planed in right direction.Thanks.

hello cary1215, this is due to infection i think you should use antibiotics cefpodoxime instead of amoxicllin for 5 days twice daily with antipyretics like ibupfren plus para combination thrice daily with it , you did not mention your son age. you can give 50mg twice if below 5 yrs and 100 mg if more than 5 yrs.
