Consideration Before Prescribing Medication?

A 74 year old woman comes to your clinic and asks you to prescribe some medications. She has been taking these medications for several months and now she asks you to prescribe them again.
Verapamil, Hydrochlorthiazid, Furosmide, Digoxin, Aspirin, Atenolol, Metformin
What do you consider before prescribing these medications?
Do you request any laboratory tests?
Tell me about each one of these medications. Tell me about the indication of using each one of these medications?
Thanks.
Best regards,
Wai

Critical Care Specialist 's  Response

Hi thanks for your question.
The long list of medicines which you have posted above for comments needs lots of investigation before prescribed to any patients. These medicines are for patient who is Diabetic, Hypertensive along with congestive cardiac failure. This patient needs ECG and Echocardiography, besides the basic investigations like CBC, coagulation profile, Blood Sugar and Serum electrolyte.
Verapamil is a calcium channel blocker used for control of blood pressure.
Hydrochlothiazide and furosmide are diuretics used for controlling blood pressure and for decreasing the after load of failing heart by removing excessive fluid from the body. Digoxin is cardiac glycoside used for failing heart. It improves the pumping capacity of heart. Atenolo is a beta blocker controls blood pressure and decrease oxygen consumption of heart Aspirin prevents the micro clot formation which obstructs the circulation of heart and Metformin is a oral hypoglycemic agent used to control high blood sugar.
Hope this answers your question.
