Child Has Excessive Hair Over Face, Body, Is Extremely Moody And Sensitive, Mother Diagnosed With PCOS. Does She Have The Same Condition?

Hi Doctor My 2 year old daughter has excess hair all over her face, including upper lip & forehead , and body. She has a ton of hair on her back and neck and even toes and fingers. I know it is not normal because no other kid her age has hair like that. She also tends to be very moody and sensitive. Her mom was diagnosed with PCOS recently. Does my daughter also have this condition? Thank you very much! Sam

Pediatrician 's  Response
Dear Sam,

PCOS is a disease that occurs after the onset of puberty. Body hair growth is under the control of adrenal glands, and overfunctioning of the adrenal androgens is responsible for overgrowth of body hair (hirsutism). You should take her for an evaluation by a general pediatrician or a pediatric endocrinologist, who may order tests of adrenal hormonal secretion before reaching a diagnosis.

Pediatrician, Neonatology Dr. Uma Rajah Ananth's  Response
Hi
As you have mentioned, this is definitely abnormal - PCOS does not manifest in infancy.
You have to consult a Paediatric Endocrinologist (Child + Hormone specialist) - adrenal problems have to be ruled out
Good luck
