Child. Have Epilepsy, On Torleva. Mental Growth Not In Par With Peers. Any Effects Of Medication On Growth?

My nephew is 7 years old. He has epilepsy for the past few years. He has been adviced torleva 100mg. By god's drace there has been no fits attack for the past year, however his mental growth is not with par with other kids of his age. HIs problem is unusual, he does not have complete attention deficiency syndrome, as he is very attracted to Indian Classical and classical oriented music and songs, but he is very adamant on many other things. I would like to know whether torleva has any side effects on his growth? If not, what is the solution

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Torleva is not reported to have effect on growth.
Early side effects include-dizziness,vertigo,depression,emotional instability,head ache,rash etc.
more grave side effects being, psychotic hallusinations, behavieral changes(agitation, anxity) in such symptomms adjestment of doses is required with consultation of treating Dr.
ITs good that he has seizuer free one year. pl. don't stop the drug suddenly-take an expert advice. 5 years without a seizuer are desired for a successful treatment.
his inclination to Indian muzic may be his natural instinct. pl. encourage him. music has good effect on brain development. try to softly turn his attitude to more +ve &progressive things.
An epileptic can lead a normal life, can get highest education,&highest position in carrier.
Wish you all the best.
Thank you.

Pediatrician Dr. Taher Y Kagalwala's  Response
Dear user,

Since the drug has worked to stop his fits, there won't be any alternative to using the medicine. This is the list of side effects of Torleva that I got from another website -

Drowsiness, weakness, headache, hostility, fatigue, nervousness, dizziness, personality disorder, irritability, agitation, emotional lability, depression, mood swings, vertigo, anxiety, unsteadiness, seizures, memory loss, confusion, increased reflexes, tingling, aggression and suicidal behavior

(Read more: Levetiracetam (Keppra) Drug Information - Indications, Dosage, Side Effects and Precautions | Medindia http://www.medindia.net/doctors/drug_information/levetiracetam.htm#ixzz2Zt9eLZkx)

I am sure that the doctors may choose to stop the medicine if he remains fit-free for 3-4 years. On the other hand, you should remember that the fits he used to have BEFORE he was started on Torleva could ALSO HAVE AFFECTED his brain development and caused the mental deficiency that you think he has.
