Can Years Of Smoking Cause Emphysema And Hyperinflation?

diagnosed with hyperinflation and emphysema at the age of 22 yrs. had only started smoking at 18 yrs.
now sixty yrs. several pnumothoraxes, 5' 10" 175lbs
was exposed to asbestos, clorine, hydrocarbons, paints, thinners and smokestack gases in the navy
for 6 yrs(19yrs to 25 yrs old). would smoking for 4
yrs cause emphysema

I can understand your concern.
Yes, smoking for 4 years with exposure of other noxious substances cancer cause emphysema and hyperinflation in later stages of life.
Along with smoking following are the possible causes for emphysema in your case.
1. Old age, age more than 50 years is independent risk factor.
2. Exposure to asbestos, chlorine, hydrocarbon, paints, other gases in Navy.
3. Second hand smoke inhalation from fellow smokers.
So all these can lead to emphysema in later stages of life.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done PFT (pulmonary function test).
PFT will tell you about severity of the disease and treatment is based on severity only. You will need inhaled bronchodilator and inhaled corticosteroids (ICS).
Don't worry, you will be alright with appropriate drugs.
