Can Treated Diverticulitis Cause Dull Pain In The Lower Back?

Male
49

I had an issue three years ago that was thought to be diverticulitis (spelling?) 3 years ago. Back than I had fever and severe pain on left side, it was treated with antibiotics etc and was fine. Two weeks ago It felt like I had it again? I had eaten popcorn the day before, a no no and decided to go to my doctore. Im almost done with my second round of antibiotics and i dont think it was diverticulitus. I remember being constipated and straining during a BM and i remember felling like I had pulled a muscle, not real painful but kind of felt like a pulled muscle. No bulge that i can see that would indicate hernia? Some times it feels like the dull ache moves to my lower back, and side? Is it possible I pulled an Oblique muscle or something? Kind of freaks me out. Colon Cancer!? I changed my diet a few months back and have been too constipated. The last five days I have been drinking lots of water and fiber and have had no issues with BM's etc but I still have the dull pain on the lower left side.

Hi there,

Diverticulitis usually doesn't cause lower back pain. The symptoms you had 3 years ago are more consistent with diverticulitis - fevers, left sided pain that is severe. Since you're 49, I'd recommend you have a colonoscopy. Everyone should have a colonoscopy at age 50, and you're almost there. Colonoscopy can not only assess for diverticulitis, but can also check for colon cancer.

I hope this is helpful. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
