Can Smoking In Woman Cause Dead Tissue Leading To Scar?

My wife recently had a double mascetomy for a breast tumior. Expanders were put in at that time. She is a smoker and did not have time to quit before the surgery. The plastic surgeon warned here of dead tissue during the healing process/recovery if nicotine was in her system,. She is very worried that she will find dead tissue under the bandages when they come off. She is trying to find out if anyone statistics are out there on the percentage of women who smoke and it has shown up in the incision scar. Make sense? I probably could have worded it better. Her doctor really scared her about the black/dead tissue...

hi
thanks for using healthcare magic

In this in ur case this dead tissue means necrosis or implant failure. Smoking increase the risk of implant failure in women who undergo breast reconstruction soon after breast removal, according to a new study.Researchers analyzed data from nearly 15,000 women, aged 40 to 60, who had immediate reconstruction after breast removal (mastectomy). They found that the risk of implant loss was three times higher in smokers.

thanks
