Can Protons Pump Inhibitor Cause Chronic Gastritis?

Hi.my 17 yr old daughter was just diagnosed with chronic gastritis. The medicine he put her on which was a protons pump inhibitor has caused her stomach to feel like its on fire. He wants her to see a radiologist. My question is why.and what will they do to her?

Hi,

I understand your concern.

Chronic gastritis is due to excessive acid produced in the stomach and irritate the stomach lining (gastritis).

Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) is one the medications that would reduce acid production leading to improving the symptoms.

Unfortunately, this has not happened in case of your daughter.

Upper endoscopy has been recommended to run by radiologist to understand why PPIs failed to improve the symptoms.

Nothing bad will happen to her, just radiologist will see in the upper GI tract lining for possible changes (inflammation, or ulcer) in order to determine appropriate treatment strategy.

Wish fast recovery.
