Can Accidental Trauma Or Hydrocodone During Pregnancy Responsible For Gastroschisis In A New Born Child?
My son was born 16 months ago with gastroschisis. I got into a traumatic car accident while I was about a month pregnant with with him which I went unconscious and was rushed to er for x rays and etc. About a month later the er prescribed me hydrocodone 5 s for tooth pain and they told me it wouldn t hurt the baby. Could either one of these be the cause for my sons condition??
Hello Thanks for writing to us with your health concern. Hydrocodone taken for a short while is not associated with gastroschisis. Like most birth defects, the cause is not known. Obviously, folic acid deficiency is implicated. Other factors are - Younger age: teenage mothers were more likely to have a baby with gastroschisis than older mothers, and White teenagers had higher rates than Black or African-American teenagers. Alcohol and tobacco: women who consumed alcohol or were a smoker were more likely to have a baby with gastroschisis. Hence, the trauma or hydrocodone briefly used will not have any role in its implication. Avoid pregnancy for atleast 6 months after the delivery. All the best. Take care.
