Can A Calcified Nodule With Interstitial Thickening Be Serious?

My husband recently had a chest xray that revealed a 8mm calcified nodule in the left upper lobe with interstitial thickening. He has had a cough for approximately 2 months and coughing up blood. He has been a smoker for 30 yrs. We have a CT scan scheduled for next week. What are the chances that this could be a serious illness???

Thanks for your question on HCM. I want to ask you a question. Had your husband Tuberculosis in past. If yes than this calcified nodule and interstitial fibrosis can be due to healed TB. Once TB is cured, there is healing and healing occurs by fibrosis, calcification or bronchiectasis. And this remains for life long. So the lesion you are seeing now ma be old TB lesion. But better to confirm this with CT thorax. I dont think its a serious thing. You may get old fibrotic lesion or bronchiectasis. And in both these condition cough with blood is common. I also advice your husband to quit smoking immediately. As chronic bronchitis is also one of the cause for blood in cough.
