Can Metronidazole Cause Slurred Speech, Confusion And Imbalance Issues?

Hi i took metronidazole twice a day for 7 days for bacterial vaginosis and I noticed I had slurred speech, confusion, and unbalanced walking. How serious is/was this? I just finished the dosage two days ago and this did not occur the first time I completed a 7 day dosage of metronidazole.

Hi & Welcome.

Yes, it can cause these symptoms which are suggestive of neurotoxicity.

Metronidazole is a commonly used antibiotic against infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa like Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia.

Its common side effects include: headache, heartburn, metallic taste, abdominal cramps, & diarrhea.

However, it can also cause neurotoxicity resulting in peripheral neuritis, convulsions, confusion, ataxia (loss of control of body movements), etc.

You should stop taking the treatment and consult your treating doctor.

Hope these answer your query.
