Can Adderall Be Restarted For Bipolar And ADHD?

I'm bipolar and adhd, but my current psych took me off adderall. Now I have almost zero motivation, determination, and priority skills. I was hospitalized because i wasn't taking my lithium, now I never miss a dose. Do I have any chance at all in getting my rx back? Any help would be highly appreciated.

hi..thanks for writing..i have understood your concerns..

adderall can worsen your mental status and cause relapse or worsening of the bipolar disorder...

however it is always difficult to treat ADHD and bipolarity together..there are other drugs for which you can ask your treating psychiatrist like...bupropion and atomoxetine..these drugs will help raising your motivation and activity and do not worsen bipolarity that much..

if i would be your treating doctor i would start bupropion for your ADHD.

in my opinion, visit your psychiatrist and discuss about the drugs i have mentioned and follow the advice...

i hope this advice will be helpful to you..best luck..

Addiction Medicine Specialist Dr. Preeti Parakh's  Response
Hi,

Yes, Adderall can be restarted if your psychiatrist is convinced that you have both ADHD and Bipolar disorder. Because of overlap between the symptoms of the two disorders, it is often difficult to make a diagnosis. Please talk to your psychiatrist and I am sure he will do what is in your best interests.

Best wishes.
