Can 1% Hydrocortisone Cream Be Used As A Substitute For Cotrimazole?

In an answer I read on this web site it stated that in place of trimovate cream you can get 1% hydrocortisone cream and cotrimazole ointment over the counter at all the pharmacies. However whenever I search for cotrimazole ointment it asks me if I mean clotrimazole. Is this a similar product?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

No, 1% hydrocortisone can not be used as substitute for clotrimazole. Clotrimazole is commonly prescribed to treat fungal (yeast) infection. Whereas, 1% hydrocortisone cream is a steroid commonly prescribed to treat swelling, itching and irritation associated with eczema, allergic dermatitis, insect bites and stings, and psoriasis. It is not useful for the treatment of fungal infection. On the other hand trimovate contains a clobetasone (steroid), nystatin (antifungal) and oxytetracycline (antibiotic) which is commonly prescribed to treat mixed infections of the skin.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
