Bottom Of Both Legs Below The Knee Are Stiff After Playing Sport. Should I Just Relate It To Sport ?

Bottom of both legs (below the knee but slightly above the ankle) are stiff after playing sport, football. I haven't played in a few months but started the new season. After the first training session my legs were stiff as mentioned. Can i just put it to the fact that i haven't played for a few months and my legs need time to adjust again? I'm not sure how i'm going to train 2 times a week and play a match on the weekends if it keeps happening. I'm in the third day after my first training session and they're still stiff. Cheers.

Hello and welcome,

Yes you are right. The stiffness is because you started the sport after a gap of few months.
Getting back to previous condition required training slowly over a period of time.
Increase the training hours slowly over a couple of days.
Do not play for long hours in the beginning itself.
For symptomatic relief give your feet and legs hot water fomentation.
You can go for aerobic exercises to increase the strength of the muscles and concurrently increase the training hours.

Thanks and take care

Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

If you don't do regular warm up exercises this will happen. Drink plenty of fluids, do stretching exercises before playing, constantly increase your workouts, take banana which is rich in potassium and also protein supplements. For painand stiffness now you can take NSAID with muscle relaxant like chlorzoxazone one before sleep. Dont strain too much if this worsens. Take rest, then constantly increase your work. Consult your doctor for further examination and management.
Hope I answered your question. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.
Yeah, you are absolutely right. Any abrupt & unaccustomed physical activity leads to crampy like pain along with stiffness & soreness of the involved muscles. This is PHYSIOLOGICAL (normal reaction of the body). So dont give up and carry on your physical activities but with a lower pace so that your soft tissues (especially muscles) get acquainted to that strain.
Momentarily
* use intermittant hot fomentation over the involved muscles
* analgesic medications
* muscle relaxant gel applications
* warm up stretching before playing the game.

Hope this helps. Good day
