Baby Suffering From Cough And Fever, Advised Mucolite, Calpol. How Long To Give Mucolite ?

Hi Doctor,

My baby is 17 months old. He was suffering from fever & cough since last sunday. We consulted a doctor and gave him calpol and mucolite. Currently he has cough and he refuses to eat. Is it fine to give him rice poridge if he doesn't take anything else. Also should we continue giving him mucolite even after 5 days of cold?

Hello
Thanks for writing to HCM

Your child needs proper chest examination.
Probably he needs antibiotic coverage also.
Continue mucolite and calpol, but you need o talk to your doctor about antibiotic coverage because even viral conditions have superadded infections mostly.
Get well soon

Take care

Hi
Thanks for your query.
It is common for children to have decreased appetite during illness.
Yes you can give soft bland diet including rice porridge, boiled vegetables, wheat porridge and plenty of fluids.

Regarding mucolite you can give a couple of days more.
Give steam inhalation as it will help in clearing of secretions.

Wishing your baby good health.
God bless..

Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

If a child has poor feeding then you should consult your doctor as it is a danger sign.
Monitor for the following in a child with cough.
1.     Rapid breathing.
2.     Chest indrawing while breathing.
3.     Abnormal noise while breathing.
4.     Nasal flaring
5.     Bluish discoloration of fingers (cyanosis)
6.     Irritability or lethargy
If your baby has any of these you should consult your doctor immediately

Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.

Welcome to Health Care Magic
Hope you are doing good. For symptomatic treatment you can use calpol and Mucolite as you should add antibiotics like Augmentin as it is a safe drug will give you quick output result. you should use it for 7 days at least.
you should avoid rice poridge for few days and help your kid to build oral intake like feeding him with chicken or vegetable soup.
thanks for using health care

Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

As he is still having cough, in spite of using mucolite , I advise you to consult the pediatrician again for follow up to examine his throat and lungs to look for the signs of throat infection and for lung examination to look for wheezing.

If there is wheezing in lungs, the child may require cough syrup with bronchodilator or nebulization.

You can give rice porridge.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
