5 Year Old Son, Having Asthma For 3 Years, Coughing, Heavy Mucus. Taking Medication, Not Getting Better. Suggestions?

Hi my son is five years old and has been said to have asthma when he was two years old. Its mostly triggered when he gets ill. Since last Monday he got a virus. The coughing just won't go. He's on ventolin and seretide, singulair and zyrtec. The mucus production is also heavy. At nights he coughs until he vomits. I thought he would have been better by now. HELP!

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi Sherrie,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Asthma requires a step wise treatment depending on the child symptoms, its frequency, and the response to treatment.

The broncho spasm which is the main factor in asthma requires bronchodilator such as terbutaline or salbutamol in aerosolized form by inhaler or neutralizer.

The inflammation or hypersensitivity should be treated by a steroid inhaler.

Other medication such as cetrizine and montelukast to be given in allergen aggravated asthma.

The response to these medication to observed over a time and treatment can be escalated or decreased depending on the response.

Continue the medication as advised and be in regular follow up with the doctor.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
