Hi Ajith Kumar,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Loose stools in exclusively breastfeed child is uncommon around this age.

Is your child exclusively breastfed or on artificial feeding?

If child is on top feeds take precautions in hygienic feeding and proper reconstitution of formula feeds.

I advise you to give exclusive breast feeds till the age of 6 months.

I advise you to stop the syrup which is given for constipation.

Stool can be given for routine examination and for culture and sensitivity to look for any infection.

Maintain hydration by giving sips of oral rehydration solutions like Pedialyte.

Probiotic and zinc can be added to his treatment.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Hi,

A 4mth old baby has immature intestines so passing no stools or passing too many is considered to be normal. He does not need to be treated for constipation with any syrups. So kindly stop it.

At present the increase in frequency of motions could be because of infection or side effect of the constipation medication .

I would suggest you to get his stool routine/microscopy test done and get him examined by a paediatrician .

Bye

Hi ajit kumar,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

I did not understand why when you complained of frequent stool of your baby he was given medication for constipation.

Is your baby breast fed or not?

Are the stools large in quantity or small frequent stools?

Are they watery?

Is there any blood or mucus associated with those stools.

Some times a breast fed baby may pass around 8 to 10 stools a day. This is normal if the baby is other wise active.

Hope this helps.
Take care.
