Will Stopping Of Eliquis Cause Atrial Fibrillation?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Jun 2015
Question: Would discontinuing eliquis(I am taking it twice daily in 5mg each) increase significantly the on set of "a-fib"? I have had a fib once and was shocked out on the first hit on Feb 5, 2015. I am taking plavix, actually copidogrel, once a day and a baby 80mg aspirin for blood thining, and will continue with them. I want to get off eliquis because I am bleeding from the slightest scratch and it takes some effort to get it to stop. My heart Doc say I can stop eliquis now. I had a stent inserting into my left lower ventricle artery on Dec 11, 2014. Please give me your opinion. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
It is more rationale to stop Eliquis, and continue on antithrombotics.

Detailed Answer:

Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that your doctor's decision to stop Eliquis is the right decision to follow.

You are in normal sinus rhytm for more than 4 months so far; no evidence of atrial fibrillation occurrences is obvious.

Eliquis is prescribed for preventing thromboembolic events, in case atrial fibrillation would reoccur. Eliquis doesn't have any effects on atrial fibrillation prevention. It is just an anticoagulant, not an antiarrhythmics.

As long as there is no evidence that atrial fibrillation has a potential to reoccur, actually Eliquis continuation concomitanlty with Aspirin and Clopidogrel would not offer a greater opportunity to be protected from thrombosis, but instead would pose to a greater risk of bleeding.

So, it would be more rationale to stop Eliquis, and continue on antithrombotics (as your doctor has prescribed).

Hope to have been helpful to you!
