There are multiple causes for a high heart rate. These include:
•     As a response to a normal situation
•     Due to an abnormal rhythm: Abnormal rhythms could arise from the upper cardiac chambers (atria) or the lower cardiac chambers (ventricles). Abnormal rhythm is due to an abnormal focus of electrical activity. Certain arrhythmia are more common as one grows older and in hypertensive people. The most common arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation and it appears that you are having the same thing. In this situation the heart rate is irregular and there is a tendency for blood clots to form in the heart which can get dislodged from the heart and give rise to a stroke. That is why you are put on blood thinners (PRADAX).
