Question: My daughter has tube in her left ear nad no tube in her right ear. She just had a ear infection in her right ear in December 22nd and had a follow up with her regular Ent doctor and they said that her infection as been cleared but she has a ruptured ear drum it will heals by itself. Now for the past 1 week she keeps saying that her right ear keeps popping out and when we called her doctores office they told her to give claritin for 3 weeks. But it has been 5 days since i started claritin but she still keeps saying ehr right ear is popping. do you think i should take her and get her ears checkd up.

Brief Answer:
This is normal till the eardrum heal, Claritin ok, regular ear check-ups.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. It is the ear drum perforation that is causing her ear to pop as air flows from the nose to the middle ear and out of the ear drum perforation. In fact, this is a good sign that the Eustachian Tube is patent.

2. This should stop when the ear drum heals, which may take a few weeks. Healing takes place faster if there is no infection and the ear is dry. Ear drops should only be given if there are any signs of infection, other wise the Claritin is fine.

3. There is no harm in getting her ears and hearing examined. Ideally there should be an ear check-up every week till the perforation heals.

4. Get a lateral view Skull X-ray to rule out any adenoid hypertrophy which is a common cause for such a situation at this age. Steroid nasal sprays and steam inhalation will help if the adenoids are enlarged. Does she have mouth breathing and snoring at night?

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
