Question: My friend has had a low grade fever and coughing for six weeks. She has had a chest x-ray and white count is low, red enlarged. on antibiotics for bronchitis although I think this is more serious. They need to do an ultrasound of the liver and bone scan. Why? I think it is more serious.

Brief Answer:
maybe they are suspecting cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

I understand your concern. Fever and cough for six weeks suggest a chronic lung infection or bronchitis. White cells can be low in some infections. Hence antibiotics are fine.

Liver ultrasound may be to look for evidence of infection in the liver too but bone scan is almost always done to look for spread of cancer in the bones. However this is just an intelligent guess.

Have they found something in the lungs to suggest cancer? Can you upload the xray image or report please.

Hope this helps. I will be available for follow up.

Regards
