Brief Answer:
It is a common condition; usually heals well.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

Your wife's pap smear has reported the presence of cervicitis, an inflammation of the cervix.

Cervicitis is a common finding observed in a gynecological exam and also on smear tests. There are several causes like infection, irritation from tampons, altered vaginal bacteria, hormonal imbalance and allergies.

After an initial smear test, treatment can be initiated based on the cause. An infection may be treated with antibiotics, usually the partner also is treated; allergies and hormonal imbalances are similarly taken care of.

A repeat test is ordered after completion of the treatment and if the cervicitis is still persistent, a colposcopy may be done to note any cellular abnormality. Further management is based on colposcopic findings.

Since this is a common feature noticed in many women, especially after child birth, simple treatment almost always results in a cure.

Prevention is important to avoid recurrences. This includes maintenance of genital hygiene, use of sterile sanitary pads, avoiding tampons and using condoms.

Hope your query has been answered. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.

Brief Answer:
Cancer is unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

In the current scenario, cancer is unlikely. The cervicitis should be attended to and if a repeat smear shows no cervicitis, nothing else needs to be done except for an yearly pap smear. If repeat smear still shows evidence of cervicitis, a colposcopy is done to see if there is any cellular dysfunction.

Hope I have clarified your doubt. Please get back if you need any more information. I will be ready to help.

Shanti.V.
