What Does This MRI Report Indicate?

Posted on Thu, 29 Dec 2016
Question: I did physio over a year ago for several months and this has been a daily struggle for me with hip/low back pain. Since MRI I have had daily sciatic nerve impingement which radiated down leg and makes left 3 toes numb breifly but goes away within 5-15
Min.....
MRI shows Mild circumferential disc bulge with superimposed moderate posterior centeal disc protrusion. Moderate narrowing of spinal canal with thecal sac AP diameter 7.3mm. The thecal sac has begun to taper which contributes to the smaller AP diameter. Neural foramina appear mild/moderate narrowed bilaterally : no definite compresssion of L5 nerve roots. Lateral recesses are mild to moderately narrowed bilaterally : no definite compression of descending S1 nerve roots.
Any insight on what I should do next daily pain with 2 small kids is not ideal !!

Brief Answer:
Spinal exercises and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

It is necessary to clarify first when MRI was done, because conditions such herniated disc disease of lumbar spine may aggravate in short periods of time.

It is clear from the last MRI results that there is compression and involvement of nerves and spinal cord.

If the MRI was done before 6 months or more, it is necessary to repeat it.

Conservative treatment is indicated first and include anti-inflammatory drugs use, exercises designed to increase muscle strength and relieve joint loading (McKenzie exercises for example).

Epidural injections of corticosteroids and painkillers also could result in long term relief.

Please discuss with your Doctor about these issues.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards.
