What Does My Blood Test Results Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: Hello,
I received my blood test results today (I attached the blood results).
My Lymphocyte Count is low 17.3 & Neutrophils count is high 77.1
All other blood results appear to be normal.
I've been sick for the past two months with sever nasal inflammation, nose pressure pain, chronic mucus draining (morning especially bad with green/yellow mucus). I also discovered two very bad infected teeth in my upper jaw that I just had removed over the past two weeks. I feel warm all over but I am not running a fever (I haven't ran a fever in the past two months as I check it almost every day). I feel sickish most ever day like there is something just not right. I had the final infected tooth removed this past Tuesday. This particular tooth was going into my sinus cavity but the CT Scan showed no infection in my sinus cavity but that side of my face was sore and my nose on that side has been really sore.

My question is with the Lymphocyte Count being low & Neutrophils count being high seem to be related to me having this infection from my teeth? I have been on tons of antibiotics for the past 6 weeks as well (augmentum, levoflexin, amoxicillin). I am going to stop taking the amoxicillion starting today as I started to get a fungus infection which has healed up after taking clotrimazole the this past week.

At this point, since I just got the final infected tooth out this past Tuesday could I still have the infection in me and will it take some time to go out? Does my blood count show an infection that I am fighting or is there anything else I should be checking?

Thank you, XXXX

Brief Answer:
Probably no current infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I've read your results. Your white blood cells are within the normal range and the same applies for the absolute number of every kind of white blood cell (neutrophils, lymphocytes etc). Normally the neutrophil count is approximately the double of the lymphocyte count. But this is not that important. I've noticed that your CRP level is very low which effectively rules out significant bacterial infection. The rest of the tests are normal.
Neutrophil counts increase whenever the body is under any kind of stress. Taking teeth out because of abscesses is definitely a stress and increased neutrophils should be expected. This explains the increased neutrophil count in relation to the lymphocyte count.
All these medication that you've used and the painful procedures you've had partially justify the ill-feeling you have.
In any case, there's nothing more in your tests that needs further investigation. Please note that the tests can never substitute for a good clinical evaluation. If the symptoms persist then a careful clinical examination by your doctor and perhaps a repeat blood testing would be appropriate.
I hope I've addressed your concerns!
If you have further questions on the subject, please ask!
Kind Regards!
