What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Apr 2016
Question: I am a 60 year old female who had Total Shoulder Replacement Surgery 3.5 mo ago. i was concerned about taking so many NSAID's along with prescription percocet, i'm still in fair amt of pain. I requested blood tests and everything is within range exempt Lymphocytes which seems to be high at 49% & my Neutrophilis which is low at 2. My PCP doesn't seem concerned but wants me to re test in a mo. Looking or another opinion as to what it could mean. I have not been sick since surgery.

NSAIDs may cause liver damage if taken in excess dose but normal blood report in your case exclude this possibility.
Mildly raised lymphocytes may be due to recent viral infection. This is a temporary finding and usually it is not a matter of concern. You are rightly advised for follow up.

I think my concern has always been what damage NSAID's can do to the stomach, specifically ulcers & bleeding. Are you saying there is nothing to indicate that there is anything wrong with my gastro intestinal tract?

Brief Answer:
If pain is in upper abdomen then upper GI endoscopy may be advised.

Hello

NSAIDs are generally prescribed in coverage with proton pump inhibitors(to prevent gastric mucosa damage),so chances of gastric ulcer/damage are less but if you have pain in upper abdomen, central (epigastric) region then upper GI endoscopy may be advised.

Additionally you may need ultrasound of abdomen due to abdominal pain,it will exclude other causes of pain.

You may need proper clinical evaluation.

I'm sorry, but I am still not getting my question answered. Would the abnormal results of my blood tests with higher than normal Lymphocytes & lower Neutrophilis, indicate that there could be anything abnormal with my stomach lining?
