Question: For dr pt XXXXXXX please hello regarding my lithotripsy the lady operating the machine set it up took me some time to get comfortable due to my curvature of the spine she then said if I can stand it it is beneficial to put it on high as quick as possible as they have better results than when u have it on low is this right and safe I managed to stand it mostly high a short spell a bit lower when it was nagging a little after about 4 wks the granules started comming out so it looks like it worked then after that I had normal x ray not ultrasound which I thought was strange and looks like its gone I viewed x ray picture and looked like little horse shoe marks there radiologist said its just gasses does this sound ok to you thank u XXXX

Thanks for your query,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have undergone ESWL for stone in Right Kidney and passed few fragments after 4 weeks .

X Ray abdomen taken after 4 weeks revealed complete clearance suggesting that stone has been fragmented completely.Since Ultrasound scan picks up a stone of a smallest size of 1 mm get your Ultrasound Scanning done .This will confirm the findings reported in X-Ray and will help you to allay your anxiety.

The horse shoe shadows are due to gases in colon.

Thanks so gasses in the colon can show horse shoe shadows in the kidney ,,,,, and is it ok to have that lithotripter machine on full most of your session she said its usually more effective and shortens the session sometimes feels a bit funny on right side is this machine totally safe also on the ct scan original one there was a very tiny little fleck of white which consultant said could be a tiny one or could be a small dot of calcium or might be nothing that was the ct before lithotripsy which also showed the big stone it looks calcium oxalate not sure exactly as he's sent granules away to check

Gaseous shadow may be overlapping kidney and not in the kidney.

Thanks for follow up.The gaseous horse shoe shaped shadow that you have mentioned may be overlapping the kidney and they are not in the kidney.

When we increase the intensity of a shock it fragments the stone easily though the shock is little more painful.

ESWL machine is safe and does not damage the kidney at all.

Just wondered what happens if u not lying still enough on the lithotripter couch as I note it says not suitable for any one with spinal abnormalities why is that a struggled with my curvature of the spine but stayed as still as I could but it sounds like from what u saying even if it slightly misses the stone it doesn't damage the kidney or too much good tissue is that correct just need to know in case I have to get it again sometime thanks
