What Does High Prolactin Levels Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: My wife periods are regular. But the flow is not up to the mark. So we consulted a gynaecologist and she advices prolactin test. We got the results and the numbers far above the XXXXXXX range. It is 141 ng/ml. Could the numbers be wrong? Can suspect the lab?

Please suggest if we can same test in another lab?

Brief Answer:
repeat test advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr. XXXXXXX thanks for trusting health care magic.
High prolactin levels are not associated with regular periods and increased blood flow during periods usually.
Get the test repeated and also get thyroid hormone levels done and then we will discuss further management

All the best

Brief Answer:
normal reports

Detailed Answer:
As you must have noticed that prolactin levels are normal and this making all the tests well within normal limits so all in all nothing to worry right now.
I would like to know the amount of flow during periods (number of pads a day and soakage of pads) and number of days of periods which if are around 2-3 days with at least 1-2 pads a day then are well within normal limits.
Many women experience decreased blood flow with the passage of age.
Take care

Thank you. Last date flow was very less. It was only for one day and not even one pad is fully soaked. LMP was on 16th January. There are no signs of periods this month till date.

She had undergone tubectomy in September 2014. And periods were proper in the months of October and November. In December she took 4 tablets (promolet n) to delay periods. She got proper periods in December after she stopped tablets. Problem started from January. And no period this month till now

Brief Answer:
urine pregnancy test

Detailed Answer:
Ok, thanks for detailed history.
This change in periods flow is due to -
- most probably because of the primolut intake
- some females experience change in pattern after tubectomy
Still because there is a delay just do a urine pregnancy test and tell me the results.
In case you have done that or on doing it now it shows negative test results then nothing to worry about and just wait for the periods.
And this pattern will be back to normal in 2-3 months to the previous pattern.
Take care

Ok doctor. Can we do urine pregnancy test now or wait for some time for accurate results? As LMP was 16th January.

Brief Answer:
wail for a week

Detailed Answer:
In my opinion wait for another 4-5 days and let it be a week after the date of expected periods and hopefully till then she will get her periods by herself only.
All the best
