What Does High Neutrophil Count Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Jul 2014
Question: My latest lab work indicates low lymph % (14.6), high neut % (74.1), and high t bil (1.3). These changes from normal levels have ocurred in last 2.5 years. What may be causing this? Should I have other tests to determine cause? If so, what tests should I have? Are there diet or lifestyle issues that may be causing this that can be changed to improve results?

Brief Answer:
Non specific, additional tests may be needed

Detailed Answer:
Dear patient,

Thanks for the query. The high neutrophil count may be indicative of an infectious or inflammatory problem; the total bilirrubin is marginally elevated; it would be prudent to obtain the rest of liver tests (AST, ALT, GGT, albumin, INR) and consider a liver ultrasound to make sure that there is nothing structural such as gallstones, fatty liver, etc causing the abnormal laboratory tests. If you have not had hepatitis viral serologies checked (Hep B, Hep C) it would be prudent as well.

As you well mention, in terms of lifestyle sometimes medications can alter these liver tests, such as acetaminophen or also excess alcohol. I would refrain from those from now.

Feel free to discuss these with your provider and keep me on the loop with results or questions

Hope this helps, wish you the best,
